By the Grace of God ….

“But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me”. 1 Corinthians 15:10 If asked if we would presume upon the grace of God and go on sinning so that grace may increase – we all would be quick to answer “God forbid” (Romans 6:1). However many times we do just that when we take Paul’s words at 1 Corinthians 15:10 and use them as a license to continue in some sinful, negative attitude or behavior. Someone who is consistently mean and rude to others may be heard to say – ‘well I just cut through the fluff, that’s just who I am and I am what I am”. Another might say, “I told that Pastor, I am not going to do it that way, _ I’m just being honest and I am what I am. So they continue in their rebellious behavior. When Paul said, “I am what I am” – he was speaking of the changes that God had made in him by His grace. He was not using that as a means to hang on to being who he was before Christ. Remember Christ came to deliver us from our sin not to establish us in our sin. It is not easy letting go of comfortable attitudes, dispositions, and actions but by the grace of God it can be done. With Paul we can walk in godliness and say with a humble heart, I am what I am through the grace of God.
